Eco Tourism in the Algarve

The latest 8.9m Cheetah Catamaran is cruising the lagoonal waters and sunny climes of the Algarve’s lesser known Archipelago. ‘The Algarvian Queen’ is built and coded for Charter and with a shallow draft of 35cm is ideal for exploring the natural paradise of inlets, islands, rivers and sand dunes along the 60km stretch of coast.

With a fully open deck, bow solarium and aft steering, the 8.5m is Cheetah Marine’s bespoke solution for Paulo Gonçalves of Algarve Wow who required a fast, stable boat with space for clients to move around freely and relax in and out of the sun.

Algarve Wow is a small and dedicated team which has been offering small group and private eco experiences since 2014. Paulo and his team also offer coastal expeditions to the famous Benagil caves, dolphin watching and cruises inland through the Guadiana river valleys which separate Spain and Portugal. An onboard marine scientist is available to answer questions and talk to interested parties about the wildlife of each unique environment which forms part of the Algarve’s commitment to preserve the pristine ecosystems and traditional Portuguese way of life for the future.

Powered by twin 80hp Honda outboards the 8.9m achieves top speeds of 25 knots and an economical cruise of 18-20 knots at 1.7 litres per mile. With a beam of 3m and a wide side door access for wheelchairs and buggys is easy with plenty of space for manoeuvring and good all round vision from all points on the boat. The Algarvian Queen is coded for 16 passengers and two crew and was built at Cheetah Marines workshops near to Nazare on the west coast of Portugal.

Likened to the Caribbean, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a 60km tidal inlet sheltered by the sandy barrier islands to the south which are still home to tiny fishing villages and restaurants selling the daily catch. To the north, the limestone hills help trap the low angle of the winter sun contributing a warm yearly climate and the Algarve’s 300 days of big blue skies and sunshine.
