Cheetah Marine will be exhibiting a new 11.2m multi purpose workboat at Seawork for 2010. Built for Calypso Marine in Fife, “Calypso” will be working in the Firth of Forth and neighbouring waters.

With overall dimensions of 11.2m x 3.7m beam, Calypso, with it’s very shallow draft can operate in half a metre of water. The flybridge, giving a superb 360 degree view, provides great potential for safety monitoring, seabird surveys, whale watching and wildlife safaris.

The 3.3m x 3m wheelhouse is fitted out to cater for the wide range of work which the catamaran will undertake. These include marine survey, safety boat, crew and personnel transfers.

Among the facilities fitted in the main cabin is a galley with a Wallas double hob, microwave, and refrigerator. A heater, screen demister, side seating, a table which converts into two berths, a triple seat with storage beneath, helm and navigator suspension seats and a double berth all combine to provide comfortable working conditions. A Jabsco electric marine toilet with holding tank is fitted in the port hull.

The comprehensive stainless steel specification was completed in Cheetah’s new production unit and includes a folding radar roof mast gantry, keel bands, rails all round to MCA compliance, a heavy duty swinging davit arm and flybridge ladder. Also fitted is a Spencer Carter electric sheave hauler and easy access to the deck is via an 850mm side door.

The electrics and electronics are managed by a Studer XTM inverter charger power management system. Garmin supply the electronics, 4010 GPS Plotter, GMR 18 Scanner, GDS 22 Black box, Bluechart CD, 200i VHF, GWS 10 Wind sensor, AIS 600 with class B transponder, 10i Remote VHF and 4008 GPS Plotter to the flybridge. A Humminbird 1197c S1 Combo side scan sonar provides part of the marine survey package.

Calypso Marine currently operate four boats, all very successfully powered by Suzuki engines. It was therefore a natural decision to go for Suzuki engines once again. Twin 300hp fourstroke engines were chosen for Calypso with twin 350 litre fuel tanks giving a powerful, long range capability. Hydrive hydraulic steering, supplied by Southern Cross Marine, is used in the main cabin with Suzuki electronic second control equipment fitted on the flybridge.

Because 'Calypso' is undertaking so many varied tasks, it is one of the most complex catamarans we have built. We have had an excellent working relationship with Stewart and Roy Taylor, the Calypso owners, throughout the build and this has made the job not only possible but very satisfying.
